Unlike other muscles, the heart cannot rest in order to regenerate in case it is injured. This means that normally heart muscle loss cannot be reversed. However, about a quarter of patients with an artificial heart, which takes over part of the heart's work, have shown the regeneration of heart muscle cells. This now leads to some hope that if it is understood why some patients can regenerate these cells a pathway to healing injured hearts can be found.
