Certain proteins in our body react to heat and touch, for instance, the burn of a chilli pepper or the pressure of a hug. Understanding this is important in order to treat conditions such as chronic pain. This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be awarded in recognition of two researchers revealing the corresponding mechanism.
