National holiday to commemorate end of slavery

Juneteenth, 19 June, has become a national holiday in the USA to commemorate the abolition of slavery. Two and a half years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, black people in Texas learned on that day in 1865 that they had been freed.
