How get babies their initial antibodies?

Mothers give their babies antibodies that keeps them safe until they build up their own immune system. Now there is some understanding how this works: during pregnancy certain sugars are attached to antibodies. The understanding may lead to better antibiotics for pregnant women, babies, and others.
